Next Steps for New Believers
You’ve started your journey—now let’s grow.
Welcome to the Family
If you’ve accepted Jesus as your Savior, welcome!
Heaven is celebrating, and so am I. You’ve just stepped into a relationship that will change your life forever.
You don’t have to know everything right now. Like setting sail on open waters, faith grows one step at a time. Here are some first steps you can take to build a solid foundation.
1. Get a Bible You’ll Actually Read
Where to get one:
- Download the YouVersion Bible App — free, easy to use, packed with devotionals, reading plans, and Bible versions.
- You can also find printed Bibles at local bookstores, thrift shops, or churches.
Recommended Translations for New Believers:
- NLT (New Living Translation) — very conversational and approachable. (My current go to)
- NIV (New International Version) — clear and easy to read.
2. Where to Start Reading in the Bible
Best Starting Points:
- Gospel of John — Learn about Jesus’ love and mission.
- Gospel of Luke — See Jesus’ life through careful detail.
- Psalms — Prayers for every season of the soul.
- Proverbs — Wisdom for everyday life.
Tip: Read small sections daily. Let God’s Word guide and shape you.
3. How to Pray When You’re Not Sure What to Say
Prayer is simply talking with God—no fancy words required.
Try this simple approach:
- Adoration — Praise God for who He is.
- Confession — Admit where you fall short.
- Thanksgiving — Thank God for His blessings.
- Supplication — Ask God for your needs.
Sample Prayer:
“God, I’m new to this, but I want to know You more.
Thank You for loving me.
Help me grow closer to You every day. Amen.”
4. Find a Church Community (Even If It’s Online)
Church is about community and growth—not rules or rituals.
I personally know how hard life can feel when you’re walking through mental illness. If you’re not comfortable being around others yet, you’re not alone—and you’re not forgotten.
Jesus meets you exactly where you are—even in your living room.
You can start by:
- Watching online services
- Joining an online small group
- Engaging in devotionals and Bible reading plans
When you’re ready, in-person connection can deepen your walk too.
5. Get Baptized When You’re Ready
Baptism is a public sign that you belong to Jesus—a celebration of your new life.
Romans 6:4 (NIV):
“We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.”
Talk to a local church when you’re ready. There’s no need to rush.
6. Don’t Walk This Journey Alone
Tell someone about your decision to follow Jesus.
Whether it’s a pastor, family member, or trusted friend, sharing your story can help strengthen your faith.
If you don’t have anyone close, email me at bipolarchristianlife@gmail.com — I’d love to encourage you.
Final Encouragement
You’ve made the most important decision of your life.
Some days will be easy. Some days will be hard.
But Jesus will walk every single step with you.
Philippians 1:6 (NIV):
“Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”
